Actor Awards 2026: Why Dove Cameron Wants to Keep Damiano David Engagement Private
Harper Grace isn’t marrying anyone without her father’s blessing.
After the country star faked an engagement to promote her new single, “if daddy says no,” she revealed the song and the stunt helped her work through something very real: when her father didn’t approve of the man she was dating.
“I’ve always been really close with my dad, and this certain relationship just did not honor me, and it really didn’t honor my dad,” Harper told Country Now in a recent interview. “They had zero respect for my father and his upbringing with me and him, literally just let alone being my dad. He was a wonderful dad, and this guy just was so disrespectful, and I was caught up in all of it.”
And when the concept of showing the experience to her fans by faking an engagement came to her, Harper couldn’t resist.
“Some people are probably going to think I’m crazy for faking my own engagement,” she admitted “I got so into just the artistic take on it because the song means so much to me.”
Indeed, for Harper, the song is somewhat of a retelling of Taylor Swift’s hit “Love Story,” in which the singer is also amid a romance her parents don’t approve of.
“It’s like the version of ‘Love Story’ instead of the romance of like, he’s going to get down on one knee and all this stuff is going to happen,” she explained. “It’s like the traumatic sad side.”
The experience was certainly cathartic for Harper, but she had her fans fooled for quite a while, announcing her “engagement” on Jan. 15, a month before revealing the truth.

As she wrote in a post at the time, sporting a massive diamond ring with a man, whose face was not in the shot, “Big news.”
Fans wasted no time wishing her congratulations.
“I cannot believe my other favorite girly is engaged!!!” one fan wrote. “I am so, so very happy for you! The ring is absolutely beautiful.”
And when Harper revealed the truth, another fan lamented, “Can't believe you did this to us!!”
