What Happened to Selena Gomez's Alex Russo? Unpacking the Shocking Wizards Finale
Who says Selena Gomez can’t do it all?
In addition to being an actress, singer, and beauty mogul, there’s one more title Selena can now add to her resumé: director.
The Disney Channel alum, 33, will be making her directorial debut in the first episode of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’s third season.
In an Instagram Story posted April 6, Selena wrote that she’s “officially part of the [Directors Guild of America]!!!” She also shared a photo of a script that reads “Directed by Selena Gomez.”
Her career milestone serves as a bittersweet moment for Selena, who first rose to fame as magical teen Alex Russo in the original Wizards of Waverly Place, which ran for four seasons from 2007 to 2012.
She returned for the revival series, which premiered in 2024, alongside her onscreen brother David Henrie, who plays Justin Russo.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is slated to end after the upcoming third season. At the end of the second season, it was revealed that Alex was the mom of Billie Russo (Janice LeAnn Brown). Alex sacrificed herself to protect Billie from her evil paternal grandfather in the season finale.
The season three logline, according to Variety, reveals that Billie “discovers that the only way to rescue her mother is to reunite with her long-lost father. As her family bands together to find Alex, Billie realizes that their combined power is the only way the Russos can defeat the evil plaguing them.”
While Alex’s fate on the show is up in the air, Selena said in her April 6 Instagram Story that she was “so grateful for an opportunity to have a say in the goodbye to the Russos.”

Before the revival premiered in 2024, Selena expressed gratitude for all the magic the original show brought to her life.
"This is what gave me everything that I have today,” she told People at the time, “and I'll never forget that this is where I started."
As Selena celebrates this new career milestone, take a look at some of her biggest moments throughout the years.
