CBS' Replacement for 'Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Revealed
So, who has CBS tapped to fill the Stephen Colbert-sized hole in their lineup once the late night host—who's helmed The Late Show With Stephen Colbert since 2015—goes off the air in May? Funny you should ask...
"If they’re looking for a show, my hand is already up," comedian and media mogul Byron Allen said during a New York’s Advertising Week panel last October, per Variety. Continued the Allen Media Group CEO, whose Comics Unleashed series had been post-Late Show off and on since 2023, "Fifty years, I've been waiting for this moment. Definitely, I’m going for it."
Now he's ready to bring the laughs, CBS announcing April 6 that they will fill Colbert's time slot with back-to-back episodes of Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen, followed by Allen's game show Funny You Should Ask.
"I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love—make people laugh," he shared in a statement, noting he appreciated CBS' confidence in his shows "because the world can never have enough laughter."
CBS is certainly laughing all the way to the proverbial bank.
In this type of time buy, Allen's company pays the network for the slot and sells the advertising themselves, meaning CBS will make money regardless of ratings. An eagerness to cash in was the reason CBS gave when canceling Colbert's popular series last July, the network calling it "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night."
As for Allen, he's well-aware that's why he claimed the mic, telling the Los Angeles Times last August, when Comics Unleashed was tapped for the 12:35 slot, "It's not cheaper. It's zero."

Who Is Byron Allen?
Born in Detroit, Allen has been making moves since elementary school. What was meant to be a two-week vacation in Los Angeles, turned into forever, when his mom Carolyn Folks landed a job as NBC's first-ever intern.
Her gig meant Allen, now 64, spent his formative years on the network's lot. "I fell in love with television," he explained in a 2019 C-Suite Quarterley profile. "The art of making television, and the business of making television and being a comedian."
He began doing standup at the Comedy Store in L.A. at 14—standing in the back between sets as as not to jeopardize their liquor license—where he was discovered by Good Times star Jimmie "J.J." Walker.
Accepting an invite to Walker's apartment, he detailed, "there was David Letterman, who had just driven out from Indianapolis in a red pickup truck; Jay Leno, who was sleeping in his car; and Marty Nadler, who went on to produce Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days."
His big break came one week before his high school graduation when Allen became the youngest comedian to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. A job hosting NBC's Real People followed and soon Allen was balancing film school at the University of Southern California with opening for Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton.
What Is Byron Allen's Company Allen Media Group?
To Allen, building a business was no laughing matter. "I always figured it wasn’t show business, it was business show," he explained. "I always focused on the business side." Mastering the art of selling series "directly to TV stations," he told CSQ, he founded what would become Allen Media Group in 1993.
Peddling his series Entertainers With Byron Allen, "I started by calling all 1,300 television stations in the country," he recounted to the outlet. "I asked them to carry this once-a-week, one-hour show where I’m interviewing seven movie stars talking about their latest projects." Though he estimates "on average, they said no about 40 to 50 times each," he received enough yeses to build his brand.
By "smiling and dialing for dollars," as he put it, he racked up a slew of successes, listed as an executive producer on everything from Mathis Court with Judge Mathis to films like 47 Meters Down.
And he truly made it rain in 2018 when he purchased The Weather Channel for $310 million.
What Is Byron Allen's Show Comics Unleashed?
"I tell the comedians we're shooting I Love Lucy," Allen explained to the Los Angeles Times of the talk show he helms with a rotating panel of fellow comics. The ideal material, he continued, is "something that's evergreen. So I don't want to hear any political humor. Just be funny, family-friendly and advertiser-friendly."
That choice meant the 233 episodes orginally shot between 2006 and 2016 as a sydnicated series—and featuring the likes of Kevin Hart, Chelsea Handler and Nate Bargatze—are essentially timeless, though Allen began filming new episodes last year.
The goal was always to recreate the experience he had during his come up. "What I remember most," he told the L.A. Times, "is that comedians were at their funniest afterwards when we went to Canter's Deli."
And, as a finale, comics will try their luck on Allen's game show Funny You Should Ask, hosted by Jon Kelley.

Is Byron Allen Married?
Allen has been mixing business with pleasure for the better part of two decades. Having already produced MTV's dating series DisMissed, his future bride Jennifer Lucas was working as a supervising producer at Allen's company when they met in April 2001.
After five years of dating and a months-long engagement, they wed at Beverly Hill's Hotel Bel-Air in September 2007, their roughly 120 guests including pals like Eddie Murphy and Natalie Cole.
In addition to collaborating on various entertainment projects—Lucas is a producer on Comics Unleased and Funny You Should Ask, along with films like Replicas, Friend Request and Boss Level—the pair are parents to daughters Chloe, 17, Olivia, 16, and son Lucas, 13.
And Allen isn't the only one making moves on the small screen. Keep reading to check out more shows you could soon be binge-watching.
