A light has been dimmed too soon.

Owain Rhys Davies—a Welsh actor who, among other roles onstage and onscreen, appeared in Twin Peaks—has died at the age of 44, his brother Rhodri Davies confirmed.

Noting his brother’s death has come as “a great shock,” Rhodri wrote in his May 31 post, “While there are still questions that remain unanswered regarding the circumstances of his death, our understanding at this stage is that Owain passed suddenly, naturally, and peacefully.”

“The reach of Owain’s love, friendship, and generosity was vast,” the statement continued. “The outpouring of messages we have received over the past few days has been deeply moving and a testament to the impact he had on so many lives.”

Rhodri went on to detail the deep bonds Owain built with his friends, colleagues and loved ones, noting the actor was also a “brother to so many others.” He also promised to share additional information about Owain’s passing once the family had more clarity.

“We know that this loss will be felt by a great many people, and we take comfort in knowing how loved he was,” Rhodri concluded. “In the meantime, we kindly ask for some privacy as we come to terms with this devastating loss and support one another through the days ahead.”

Owain landed roles on the screen and onstage throughout his career, including appearances in Netflix’s The OA, the 2016 film Alice Through the Looking Glass and 2019’s A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life.

Aside from his onstage work—which included productions at The Royal National Theater and London’s West End—Owain was perhaps best known for his role as Agent Wilson in David Lynch’s 2017 reboot of Twin Peaks in 2017.

Pinned to Owain’s Instagram page was a picture of him with the famed director, expressing his gratitude for his time working on the project.

“What a wondrously beautiful thrill ride it was working with this legend,” Owain captioned his Sept. 2017 picture with David. “Being welcomed in by the @twinpeaks family of cast and crew was truly an honour and can't thank them enough for allowing me to be apart of this cinematic masterpiece.”

Following Owain’s sudden passing, the Welsh National Theater penned a moving tribute to the actor.

“Owain was a remarkable talent whose work enriched Welsh theatre and screen,” a statement shared to Instagram read, “and whose contribution to the performing arts will be remembered by audiences, colleagues, and friends alike. His passion, creativity, and dedication to his craft made a lasting impact on the cultural life of Wales.”

“The Welsh performing arts community is poorer for his loss,” the theater continued, “and we can only imagine the many more stories he would have gone on to tell.”
