The Pitt Season 2 Finale: Unpacking Dr. Robby’s Emotional Cliffhanger

1 hour ago 1

The Pitt’s Patrick Ball Has Hilarious Reaction to More Potential Cast Changes

The Pitt is a tough place for sensitive people.

And yet season two needed them, as each episode saw the mental health of Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch deteriorate further and further, sparking the concern of his friends.

And with Robby’s three-month sabbatical in the form of a remote motorcycle journey looming, along with his admission in the penultimate episode that he “didn’t want to be here anymore,” all eyes were on the ED attending during the April 16 finale.

While season two has seen Robby’s peers and friends attempt to get through to him—including charge nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa) and Dr. Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif)—it is by way of conversations, and with the help of the season’s Baby Jane Doe, that Robby finally seems to reach a turning point.

The first is with Robby’s peer and perhaps closest friend Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy). Abbot initiates a conversation in the hospital’s ambulance bay, telling Robby people are concerned he doesn’t plan on coming back from his sabbatical.

“When people worry about you, it makes me think that I should be worried about you,” Abbot says, “and I don’t like worrying about things.”

Though the conversation is cut off with the arrival of a pregnant woman in an ambulance, Abbot picks it back up after he and Robby save her baby and her life through an emergency C-section.

“Yes, life can suck,” Abbot tells him, noting he’s also had similar thoughts after his time in the military and the loss of his wife. “It can be unbearable and brutal, and ugly, and heartbreaking. But it’s also beautiful and hilarious.”

Robby tells him while his work at the Pitt has given him meaning, it’s also deeply affected him. "I’m not convinced a part of you dies every time you see a fellow human pass,” he said. “I’ve seen so many people die that I feel like it’s leeching something from my soul."

Abbot’s advice? “Go on a cruise, man. Knock off this helmet-less motorcycle s--t.”

Throughout the final hour of his shift, Robby also talks with Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), with whom he’s always had a close relationship but has butted heads with this season—perhaps because he resents that she’s allowed her mental health struggles to bubble up to the surface when he’s pushed them down in himself.

During their conversation, Robby tells her about the life he’d envisioned for himself, that he feels is too late to get now.

“I know that life can be challenging, especially when it doesn’t work out the way you expect it,” he tells the resident. “I thought I would be married with two kids in college by now, maybe have some property with a pond. We could play hockey on it in the wintertime. And yet, look at me now. No wife, no kids, no pond.”

When Robby brushes off her suggestion that it’s not too late, she tells him, “Please be safe. We need you here, even if you can be a d--k sometimes. Good luck.”

And finally, it’s Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) who gives Robby his bluntest observation, but perhaps the one he needed most.

While the pair’s close bond deteriorated with the season-one revelation that Langdon was addicted to pain meds, the resident’s perspective has shifted after a stint in rehab and ten months away from the job.

Warrick Page/HBO Max

“You know who I saw in rehab?” Langdon asks Robby. “I saw a bunch of guys just like you. The only difference is they accepted help.”

But while it seems like the staff of the Pitt is finally getting through to Robby, it’s the episodes final moments that are the most revealing.

Seeking a reprieve from watching eyes, Robby escapes into the nursery to visit with Baby Jane Doe, the infant who was abandoned in the ED during episode one. The location itself is a significant one for Robby: it’s where he suffered an emotional breakdown in season one, among the show’s first indications that Robby’s struggles ran deeper than initially realized.

And the words he shares with Baby Jane are further proof: “I got abandoned too, when I was eight. But I got through all of that and so will you. I got a good feeling you’re going to be just fine. Everything’s going to be just fine.”

The episode ends with Robby holding the baby close, telling her, “You got so many wonderful things to see and so many people to love ahead of you. It’s okay.”

As for whether Robby will get onto his motorcycle at the shift’s close, that detail remains up in the air. And Baby Jane Doe? Well, with Dana on the hunt throughout the episode for a medical foster, perhaps Robby’s dream is closer than he realized.

But one thing is certain: The attending’s mental health—and whether or not he decides to take action—will take center stage in season three, the events of which creator R. Scott Gemmill says will take place just four months after season two.

“In some ways, I think Robby’s afraid to go on his trip, and he’s afraid to stay,” he told Variety of the finale. “He knows staying is not good for him, but he doesn’t have anything else in his life. This is a turning point for him. Should I stay or should I go now? If I stay, there will be trouble. If I go, it could be double.”

“That’s where he’s at,” he continued, “and he ultimately has to make a decision, and that’s what Season 3 will be about: What was that decision and how is it going to affect him moving forward?”

While fans will likely have to wait far longer than the show’s imagined four months to reenter the Pitt, there is plenty of exciting TV to tide them over. Read on for more.
