And when she stepped onto the award show’s carpet ahead of the May 25 ceremony—which she hosted—the 55-year-old had extra special people at her side: her partner, Eboni Nichols and their son Rebel.

For the occasion, Queen Latifah donned a voluminous, gray and white fur coat which she paired with a white belt at her waist and her hair pulled back into a slick ponytail.

Eboni, at her side, wore a forest green dress featuring thigh-level cutouts in the skirt and a matching jacket. The two women each held a hand of their son between them, while Eboni’s other hand was held by Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade’s 7-year-old daughter Kaavia, who joined the family on the carpet.

While Eboni and Queen Latifah—who have been together for over a decade—make fairly regular public appearances together, the AMAs marked Rebel’s first major red carpet appearance. For the special occasion, the 6-year-old donned a black suit jacket which he paired with a white button-down, black shorts and knee-high socks.

But Rebel’s best accessory was his smile as he stood hand-in-hand with his moms.

For Queen Latifah, her return as host of the AMAs was thirty years in the making: The last time she hosted was in 1995 alongside Tom Jones and Lorrie Morgan.

And ahead of this year’s ceremony, the Last Holiday star shared some insight into what it takes to take center stage during an award show.

“You got to block everybody out, baby,” she explained in a May 24 Instagram video. “It’s about what is going on in the show.”

As for which of the many musical performances and guests she was most excited to see, the answer was Teyana Taylor

“I’ve seen her rock live,” Queen Latifah explained. “She’s incredible live. But she’s had such a year, I know she’s just going to have to shut it down with coming right back home, to music. And reminding you that she can sing, baby.”

And on the night of, the One Battle After Another star did indeed remind everyone she can more than sing with her performance of “All of Your Heart.”
