While sure, interpreting the "garden formal" or "beach chic" dress code comes with its own set of challenges, at least there's a dress code to interpret.

Finding an outfit for the wedding welcome party is a whole other beast—especially when the invitation has zero instructions on attire. Context clues will only get you so far, which is why we tapped Kate Blackwell, Founder and Lead Stylist of Something White Styling, to help us solve the dilemma:

What should I wear to a wedding welcome party?

"My best advice for guests trying to figure out what to wear to a welcome party when the dress code isn’t clear is to plan your outfit based on the event's location, the time of year, and the time of the event," she tells E!. "Usually, those 3 things can really help a guest figure out how formal or casual to dress, then from there it comes down to personal style."

Stylist tip: "The biggest mistake guests tend to make when the dress code is not stated clearly is opting for something too casual. I strongly believe that being overdressed is better than being underdressed."

BAGONE Satin Lace Maxi Dress

When in doubt, go with a satin maxi. It's a little more dressed up but still keeps the look simple and sophisticated. Bonus points: This Amazon number comes in so many different hues, so you can tailor it to the setting and season.

WAYF x Sara Walker Elle Capelet Satin Minidress

The cape on this rich satin mini dress makes it so effortlessly polished, and the design delivers just enough dramatic flair without demanding too much attention—that's reserved for the bride.

Stylist tip: "Consider the time of day! If it’s in the evening, it’s definitely more formal, cocktail attire at least. If the event is during the daytime you can probably assume it will be slightly more casual, a sundress and some pretty sandals would probably be a perfect look."

Astr the Label Meana Halter Plunge Drop-Waist Midi Dress

If you're attending an afternoon welcome party, this charming drop-waist midi dress is the perfect pick. It comes in the most stunning butter yellow and can easily be dressed up with a pair of heels.

Reformation Astrid Two Piece

If you want to mix it up from the classic cocktail dress while still following etiquette, go with Reformation's Astrid two-piece set. The floor-length silhouette and sweeping chiffon fabric give it an easy air of elegance without feeling too over-the-top.

Stylist tip: "The key outfit formula for a welcome party that will never fail you is polished + effortless + slightly elevated. For the ladies, I always lean into a simple navy dress (not black) which allows you to dress it up or down with accessories and shoes. For those who may be a little more daring, a fun sculptural top paired with high-waisted trousers is also always a fail-safe combo."

Jonelle Silk Dress

The boat neckline and open back with cowl detailing is so ethereal and timeless—especially in the classic navy shade. But you can always go the pastel or polka dot route if the party welcomes a little personality.

Lioness Martini Mini Dress

Skip the accessories for this look and let the structural design and gold hardware do the talking. Shoppers said it "snatched [their] body in all the right places" and called it "a good mix between elegant, classy, and sexy."

Stylist tip: "Ways to elevate an outfit without making it too formal comes down to how you bring the look to life with accessories. For the ladies, don’t throw on too much jewelry, just a statement earring or chunky collar necklace will do. Depending on the look you may not need jewelry—just a fabulous bag."

Joryin Woven Evening Clutch

You can't go wrong with this gorgeous woven leather clutch that could easily pass for Bottega. It's chic, refined, and simple but not boring.

PAVOI 14K Gold Plated Door Knocker Statement Earrings

These 14k gold-plated statement earrings go with everything—whether you're dressing for an afternoon soirée or evening drinks—and level up any look so effortlessly.

Staud Reef Bag

Attending a beach wedding? The Staud Reef Bag is perfect for the occasion, and works just as well for the welcome party as it will for the actual ceremony, so you won't overpack!
