PDP Convention Ruling Confirms Democracy, Party Unity – Spokesman Says

A court decision validating the 2025 national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as a major win for internal democracy and constitutional order within political parties.

The judgment confirmed the legitimacy of the PDP convention held in Ibadan and affirmed the party’s leadership structure. A statement signed by the publicity secretary of the PDP in Edo State, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, which was released earlier today, February 27, 2026, says the ruling removes uncertainty and strengthens democratic governance within the opposition.

The party leadership welcomed the outcome, stating that the court had spoken clearly. They insisted that the convention remains valid, the leadership remains intact, and the will of party members stands unchallenged.

The party officials praised loyal members across the country, particularly in Edo State, for maintaining discipline during what they described as attempts at destabilisation. According to the statement, those members remained committed to due process and party principles despite political pressure.

The party argued that some individuals, both inside and outside its structure, had hoped to weaken the opposition by creating internal divisions. It claimed these efforts were designed to undermine democratic accountability and create confusion.

The statement also criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that external forces had attempted to interfere in PDP affairs. It insisted that the party cannot be controlled or manipulated from outside and remains an independent political institution.

Officials further addressed former members who had shifted allegiance to the APC while continuing to engage in internal disputes. They argued that such actions amounted to sabotage and duplicity.

According to the party, the expulsion of those individuals was a constitutional decision aimed at preserving discipline and order. It was described as a necessary step to protect the integrity of the organisation.

The statement stressed that political parties must operate within constitutional rules and resolve disagreements internally. It rejected the use of external litigation and political manoeuvring as tools for internal disputes.

The PDP maintained that the judgment reinforces the principle of party supremacy and the rule of law. They said internal democracy remains essential for political stability and effective governance.

In closing, the party declared confidence in its future and unity. The statement stressed that the PDP remains committed to lawful and disciplined politics.

“Our confidence in the PDP has always rested on a simple but unshakeable conviction: that we will submit to law, uphold constitutional order and defend party supremacy without apology,” the statement read.

It added: “The Renaissance of the PDP is underway. Let every enemy of democracy take notice: the PDP is lawful, disciplined, united and resolute.”
