Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has stated that the job of the Nigerian Police is to ensure the protection of citizens in the country.
He, however, lamented that the security agency is known for enforcing what is not the law in the country.
The former presidential candidate shared his grievance during an appearance on Channels Television on Wednesday.
He was speaking on citizen-police relations, stressing that policing should be about protecting citizens in the country.
Sowore urged police officers at the leadership level to change the security force’s attitude by ensuring that police officers’ first priority is protecting Nigerians.
“First thing is that we should call the Nigeria Police Department and not a Force because some of the activities of the Nigeria Police and how they have an adversarial relationship with citizens is rooted in where they came from, the colonial era.
“Policing should be about ensuring the protection of citizens in the country. The Nigerian Police have an interest only in enforcing laws and even enforcing what is not the law.
Those people at the top of the police hierarchy can understand that they need to change the DNA of the police by ensuring that their first attitude is to protect the populace,” he said.
