We connected with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anetta Reszk to break down the difference and advise which is best.
What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens?
- Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen: This type of SPF provides immediate and reliable UVA coverage thanks to the active ingredient zinc oxide. "Physical sunscreens are also less likely to cause irritation, making them a preferred option for sensitive or compromised skin," explains Dr. Reszk.
- Chemical Sunscreen: "These formulas tend to be lighter, absorb more easily into the skin, and do not leave a visible residue," she says. For that reason, they're often preferred for daily use since they layer and wear well beneath makeup.
Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better?
Now that you understand the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens, you're likely wondering which is better.
The truth is one isn't inherently more effective than the other. According to Dr. Reszk, "Both can provide excellent protection when formulated well and applied properly." Ultimately, the better option depends on your skin type and personal preferences.
"Physical sunscreen is best suited for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin, post-procedure skin, and patients with inflammatory skin conditions," says Dr. Resk.
On the other hand, "Chemical sunscreen is best suited for normal, combination, and oily skin types, particularly for patients who prefer sheer, lightweight formulas that do not feel heavy or occlusive."
If a white cast is your main concern, opt for chemical or tinted mineral sunscreens, advises Dr. Resk.
