Hollywood filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld has joined the short film Serenity as an executive producer as it heads into awards season.
Serenity follows Zoey, a funeral home employee who must set aside her personal struggles to support Katherine, a mother who is grieving the loss of her daughter. The movie, from Montreal-based Fullum Films, explores grief, compassion, and the unexpected connections that can emerge in moments of profound loss.
Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Frank Tremblay and produced by David-Alexandre Coiteux, Daniel Roby and Tremblay, Serenity stars Kamilla Kowal (Heated Rivalry, Letterkenny), who also serves as an executive producer on the project, as Zoey and Judith Baribeau as Katherine. The other cast members are Melissa Carter, Eric Davis, Coiteux, and Jade Charbonneau. Simon Lamarre-Ledoux was in charge of cinematography, with Cédric Coussy handling editing.
Serenity, which has a running time of 23 minutes, has screened at more than 30 festivals and won more than 10 awards, including at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where it was honored as the best English short, along with a best actress award for Baribeau.

Sonnenfeld, the director of Men in Black, The Addams Family, Get Shorty and others, served as cinematographer on several Coen Brothers films, as well as When Harry Met Sally and Misery, before making a name for himself as a director.
“I’ve worked with David-Alexandre Coiteux for many years, and I’m honored to executive produce his movie, Serenity,” Sonnenfeld said. “The film is sparse, beautifully photographed and sensitively directed, I was quite moved. The performances are nuanced and moving. I’m proud to be associated with it.”
Said Coiteux: “Having Barry Sonnenfeld join Serenity as an executive producer is a tremendous honor. His extraordinary body of work and his unique contribution to cinema make his involvement particularly meaningful to our team.”
