How Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis Bonded Over Being Girl Moms
Jamie Lee Curtis is sharing insight into her new offscreen role.
The Oscar winner announced her and husband Christopher Guest are now grandparents after their daughter Annie, 39, and her husband Jason Wolf welcomed a baby boy in December.
And while the entire family has been overjoyed by the newest addition, the baby’s birth came at a difficult time, arriving just one week after the deaths of Jamie and Christpher’s longtime friends Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
“Their baby boy was born in December, and it was a week after Rob and Michele. And Rob and Michele are her godparents,” Jamie said on the IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson podcast April 1. “They died on her birthday. My beautiful daughter, who loved them, as we all did, managed to be able to metabolize that grief and sadness as we all have had to do.”
The 67-year-old added through tears, “And then my daughter and her husband brought their son to this world a week later.”
And becoming a grandparent has been especially meaningful for the Freaky Friday actress—also mom to daughter Ruby, 30—as it was never something she imagined for the trajectory of her life.
“I never thought I would have children,” Jamie said. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be a grandma. A granny. I wanna be ‘Granny.’ It has just been an extraordinary connection.”

The True Lies actress explained that while the birth of her grandson was well-known in their circle of friends, they had decided to keep it private for the first few months. However, Annie let her mother share the news publicly because of how much she loves and respects Michelle Obama.
“I called my daughter and said, ‘You know, I’m about to do this thing, I think it’s gonna come up. How would you feel about me talking about it?’” Jamie recalled. “She said, ‘Tell her I love her.’ My daughter Annie said, ‘Tell her I love her.’”

“You are loved and so respected that she would say, ‘Yes, Mom, you can talk about it to Michelle Obama ‘cause she’s a G,’” Jamie continued as she and Michelle both held back tears. “’Cause she loves you. Because you represented love in the world and you brought love to the White House and beyond.’”
And Jamie was thrilled that the first time she got to say “to the universe that I became a granny” was with the former First Lady, because of what Michelle “represented to [Annie] and her generation of young women.”
