Kate Hudson Reveals Her Dream of Working With Mom Goldie Hawn

This friendship is no laughing matter.

Goldie Hawn recently reflected on her decades-long relationship with George Schlatter—the creator of the sketch comedy series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, which gave Goldie her big break—and the feedback that changed her career

“It was a great experience for me,” she told E! News' Will Marfuggi at the premiere of the new documentary Sock It To Me: The Legend of George Schlatter on April 13. “And I’ll tell you, George is one of the only people in my life that understood who I was, when he almost didn’t even know me. He got me so fast.”

In fact, he let her be herself at a pivotal moment in her career.

“When I messed up and I laughed, because I laugh when I mess up, and I said to him, ‘George, I’d like to do that again please,’” she recalled. “And he said, ‘No Goldie, that was just perfect.’ That was the beginning of my career.”

And while the 80-year-old—who’s been dating Kurt Russell for more than four decades—wasn’t on the show as long as some of its other stars, including Dan Rowan, Dick Martin and Ruth Buzzi, she still has a lifetime’s worth of memories. In large part thanks to George, now 96.

“I had a lot of great memories from George,” she said. “But more than memories, it was a feeling. It was being in the chorus with everybody you loved, having fun, laughing all the time and going to work. And it was really just like a playtime. There’s a million memories, but more importantly, it was a very fantastic way to work.”

And these days, who they work with on projects is feeling more important than ever to Goldie’s family.

For her daughter Kate Hudson, working with her family—from her mom, to her stepdad Kurt, brother Oliver Hudson and stepbrothers Wyatt Russell and Boston Russell—would be a dream.

“My mom and I were talking about this,” Kate told E! News in an exclusive interview. “Life, it goes fast, and you just gotta take every second in and every moment I get with my family and my parents is something I’m going to be very present in.”

The Running Point star said “it would be amazing if I got the opportunity to work with my mom,” before conceding, “It probably will never happen but we’ll see. Put it out there.”

After all, everyone in her family are seasoned Hollywood pros.

“My family is a part of the industry and loves the industry and so there’s a familiarity and an understanding,” she explained. “There’s recognition that’s sort of different than if you grew up in a family that wasn’t and didn’t understand the business.”

Mom Goldie Hawn, Father Bill Hudson

Goldie married West Side Story actor Gus Trikonis in 1969. They separated in 1973 but the actress didn't file for divorce until after she got engaged to Bill, a member of the Hudson Brothers band, toward the end of 1975.

After her divorce was finalized, Goldie and Bill wed on July 3, 1976. They had kids Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson together before separating in 1980 and divorcing two years later.

Oliver marked Father's Day in 2015 by posting a throwback photo of himself as a kid with Bill and Kate, captioning the snap, "Happy abandonment day…" Bill told the Daily Mail afterward, "I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver's Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate."

Oliver said on Watch What Happens Live that November, however, that the public friction "actually started a dialogue" and he was back in touch with Bill after 12 years of not speaking.

Kate said on CBS Sunday Morning in April 2024 that she still didn't "really have" a relationship with Bill, "but…it's warming up."

She added, "But it’ll be whatever it will be...I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy."

Bill is also dad to Zachary Hudson and Emily Hudson with late ex-wife Cindy Williams, his spouse from 1982 to 2000, as well as daughter Lalania, born to him and then-girlfriend Caroline Graham in 2006.

Brother Oliver Hudson

Goldie and Bill's first child was born Sept. 7, 1976.

Like Kate, Oliver was raised by his mom and her longtime partner Kurt Russell, but he said on Larry King Live in 2018 that he and Bill were "trying" to maintain communication.

“I had posted something that was darkly comedic and it blew up into something, and actually it helped us with our relationship," the Rules of Engagement alum recalled. "So now we’re kind of keeping in touch."

But Kurt will forever be his dad.

The Miracle actor is "not my blood father," Oliver told Us Weekly in December 2025, "but I have a lot of his mannerisms. He's just got so much life force in him. And when he loves, he loves hard, and when he laughs, he laughs hard."

As for his mom, "I have all of her sensitivity," Oliver noted. "I feel a ton, you know—too much. That's why I'm on 20 milligrams of Lexapro."

On his own home front, Oliver married Erinn Bartlett in 2006, and they share sons Wilder Books Hudson, born Aug. 23, 2007, and Bodhi Hawn Hudson, born March 19, 2010, as well as daughter Rio Laura Hudson, who was born July 18, 2013.

"Pa" Kurt Russell

Kurt and Goldie met and fell in love in 1983 while making the World War II-era romance Swing Shift. They've been together ever since and never felt the need to officially swap vows.

“We’ve both been married and divorced," Kurt, who was married to actress Season Hubley from 1979 until 1983, said on TODAY in 2020.

And marriage "didn't work for either one of us," Goldie added. "I'm not saying that it wouldn't work again, but I didn't think that we really needed to get married. I mean, what marriage ended up being, in many ways, is big business."

Brother Boston Russell

Just as they grew up mainly with Kurt and call him "Pa," Kate and Oliver also have a close bond with Kurt and Season's son, Boston Russell, born Feb. 16, 1980.

“For me, it felt like such a big moment because it was like, ‘My mom is madly in love with this guy.’ For me, at the time, it was like, ‘Is this going to be my dad?’” Kate said on an episode of her and Oliver's Sibling Revelry podcast, remembering the initial blending of their families. “And I was meeting his son, which meant, ‘Does this mean that this is my brother?’ It was a lot to handle at such a young age.”

Boston leads a private life but has appeared at events in support of his family, including Kurt and Goldie's joint induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.

Brother Wyatt Russell

Kurt and Goldie's only child together, Wyatt Russell, was born July 10, 1986.

The Thunderbolts* star played professional ice hockey in Europe before injuries forced him to hang up his skates in 2010, after which he joined the family business fulltime.

Wyatt has been married to Meredith Hagner since 2019 and they share two sons, Buddy Prine, born in March 2021, and Boone Joseph, born Feb. 13, 2024.

"When you become a parent, you realize what your parents feel about you," Wyatt told People in April 2025. "And so you realize that all they want you to be is happy. They want you to live a fulfilled life, and that's all you care about for your kids. And so I'm imagining that's all my parents care about."

Pretty much.

"I look at our kids and grandchildren and there's nothing in the world that could make me as proud as I am of all of them," Goldie told Australian Women's Weekly in 2022. "Being a grandmother is amazing, I love it. It brings incredible joy. Family is so important."

Son Ryder Robinson

Kate's first child was born Jan. 7, 2004, to her and then-husband Chris Robinson. They separated in 2006 and finalized their divorce in October 2007, but all has been pretty amicable for the coparents in the meantime.

"He's a permanent fixture in my life, but I believe our love changed its form, it shifted," Kate told The Times Online in 2009 of her evolving relationship with the Black Crowes singer. "I think we were meant to have a child, and we have this amazing little boy together and therefore we'll be together our entire lives."

Chris shared in February 2026 that Ryder would be graduating from NYU in May and he "couldn't be more proud."

And the gene pool runs deep, Chris telling People, "I think he's kind of leaning into maybe acting more. But he's a very, very good singer, and he's a really good guitar player, and he loves music."

Better yet, the musician added, "He's a young man with great character. He's very charming, very smart, very handsome, and the world really is his for whatever he wants to do."

On Instagram in April 2025, Ryder—who previously dated Iris Apatow—marked "Year 2" with girlfriend Piper Lacy.

Son Bingham "Bing" Hawn Bellamy

Kate welcomed son Bingham with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy on July 9, 2011, naming him in honor of Matt's mother, Marilyn Bingham and Kurts' dad Bing Russell. The pair got engaged but confirmed in December of 2014 that they were no longer together.

"Relationships ending are painful, and you can choose to carry that or you can choose to reframe it," Kate told Allure in 2015. "If Matt and I had a great relationship, we would still be together, but we chose to move on because we had different visions of how we wanted to live our lives. That doesn't mean, though, that we can't rebuild something that would be the best thing for the kids."

Matt married Elle Evans in 2019 and they welcomed daughter Lovella in June 2020 and son George in May 2024.

Kate told Women's Health in 2021, "One thing that Matt said to me, which I loved, is, 'I just want to make sure that Bing feels like he's gaining something, not losing something.' I think it's even bonded us closer…because we have to trust that we're protecting each other."

From the glimpses into their world his mom has shared over the years, the drums are Bingham's chosen instrument. Plus, he plays baseball and has shown an interest in finance.

"He trades his own stocks," Kate said of her second-born on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2024. "He reads the news about where things are. He knows the class of each stock and each bond and all this stuff. It's crazy. So, he'll be very interesting to watch grow up."

Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa

Kate started dating musician Danny Fujikawa in 2016 and they welcomed daughter Rani on Oct. 2, 2018. Danny, a friend for years before they get together, popped the question in 2021.

“I hope we get married!” Kate told the Sunday Times in 2022. “We’re not in a hurry. The last thing I need right now is to plan a wedding on top of everything else, but I’m excited about it. Last night he was going through some old footage on his phone of him and Rani and it melted my heart. He’s such a wonderful dad and stepdad.”

And the Almost Famous actress, who was 24 when Ryder was born, acknowledged that she was "more present as a mother" at this stage of her life.

"With Ryder, our relationship is so special because I grew up with him," she explained. "The big learning period of my life and becoming a woman happened as I was being a mother. It was a choice. We wanted to have a baby and it felt instinctual. I was very attached to him and vice versa. I took him everywhere. I didn’t leave him until he was 2. I didn’t even really put him in school until he was 10, whereas I’m far more structured with my other kids."

When not in school, however, Rani gets to jet around the world with her mom and dad, and, in 2024, she starred in a SKIMS holiday campaign with her parents, brothers, uncle Oliver's family and grandma Goldie.
