Former Ondo State First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has secured the Labour Party (LP) ticket to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Owerri Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general election.

Naija News reports that she confirmed on Wednesday that she had received her certificate of clearance from the party, making her the official candidate for the constituency.

Akeredolu explained that her move to the House of Representatives race came after she stepped away from the senatorial contest. She admitted that some of her supporters might not be happy with the decision, but said it became necessary for the peace and progress of the party.

According to her, the Labour Party is still trying to recover from internal problems and legal battles that affected its activities for a long time. She said the decision was taken to help keep the party united as members work together to rebuild its structure ahead of the next election cycle.

The former first lady also said her choice was connected to her belief in teamwork and collective leadership within the party. She added that one of the reasons she joined the Labour Party was because of the opportunity to work with women in leadership positions.

Akeredolu maintained that her political ambition has always been about service and creating opportunities for women in politics. She said her plans would remain the same no matter the position she eventually occupies in the National Assembly.

She added that she wants to continue pushing for more female participation in elective offices while also offering leadership focused on courage, care, and purpose.
