A Russian drone strike targeting Kharkiv late Tuesday caused widespread fires that destroyed residential homes and industrial facilities, forcing local residents to evacuate.
Emergency crews worked to rescue civilians from the affected areas, with firefighters seen helping a disabled woman reach safety. Among those forced to flee their homes were elderly women and children.
Why It Matters
Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, is located roughly 30 kilometers from the Russian border, making it uniquely vulnerable to swift aerial attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Throughout the ongoing conflict, the region's residential neighborhoods and energy infrastructure have frequently been targeted by drone and missile strikes. Due to its close geographic proximity to Russian territory, air defense systems often have only minutes to detect and intercept incoming strikes before they impact populated areas.
