The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State took a fresh twist on Wednesday as the state chapter rejected a 16-member caretaker committee announced by a faction of the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee.
The development has further exposed the widening cracks within the party’s structure in the state, with both sides laying claim to constitutional legitimacy.
Naija News learnt that a faction of the party, reportedly led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had on Tuesday unveiled the caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the party in Taraba State.
The panel, chaired by Victor Falack, was mandated to pilot the party’s activities for an initial period of 30 days or until a new executive committee is elected.
According to the faction, the decision was taken in line with provisions of the party’s constitution and was aimed at stabilising the party’s structure in the state.
The group maintained that the move was necessary to ensure compliance with constitutional guidelines and restore order within the party’s ranks.
However, the recognised Taraba State leadership of the PDP swiftly dismissed the announcement, describing it as a nullity.
In a statement signed by the party’s Media and Publicity Officer in the state, Herbert Faith Bello, the chapter described the purported caretaker committee as “false, misleading and unauthorised.”
The statement insisted that the announcement emanated from “an unrecognised body with no constitutional standing within the Party.”
It further accused those behind the move of attempting to create confusion and unnecessary tension among party members in the state.
Reaffirming its authority, the state chapter declared that the PDP in Taraba remains duly constituted under the leadership of Acting Chairman, Comrade Chief Obidah Bitrus.
The statement stressed that the existing leadership structure remains intact and fully committed to upholding the party’s constitution and the principles of internal democracy.
“Party members and the general public have been advised to disregard the caretaker committee announcement in its entirety, as it does not reflect the position of the recognised state leadership or any authentic organ of the party,” the statement read.
