BTS Teams Up for “Destined” New Project After Reuniting Following Military Service

BTS is officially back—and they’ve got a sweet treat to accompany the news.

Now that the seven members of the K-Pop band—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jung Kook—have each completed their mandatory military service, they’re back and better than ever. And to help celebrate the news, they’ve teamed up with OREO to release a special, limited-edition flavor: brown-sugar pancake, inspired by the dish hotteok, complete with purple cookies.

For the band, the partnership is a call back to their earliest days as K-Pop trainees.

“I want to say this,” RM said in a Q&A video about the partnership in E! News’ exclusive clip. “Back when we were trainees, we released a song called ‘A Typical Trainee’s Christmas.’ That was 14 years ago.”

The comment sparked a memory for Jimin, who remembered that the song includes the word “oreo” in the chorus, singing the line at RM. His bandmate responded with the subsequent lyric, “The company keeps telling me to practice.”

As RM put it, “From that line, didn’t this partnership seem kind of destined?”

The decade-old memory caused Jimin to reflect, “Wow, was that really 14 years ago,” to which RM quipped, “You really have a plan for everything.”

For the seven members, other than feeling like an uncannily full-circle moment, the OREO partnership also allows their fans—the BTS Army—to feel connected with the band on a daily basis.

“If I just saw it at a store,” Suga said of the special purple packaging, “I’d be curious and probably buy it.”

To which Jin added, “There are so many fans who like OREOs, combining that with their love for us in a collaboration—I think this will make fans happy and excited.”

Plus, the special-flavored cookie becoming available in the US is its own full-circle moment.

“I remember when we first went to the Billboard Music Awards in 2017,” RM said, “It’s been a long time, everyone. It's such an honor.”

Jimin, too, is almost at a loss for words. “In a way, being able to put a piece of us into the American culture is really unimaginable,” he said, “and a feeling I can’t explain.”

After all, how better to celebrate their reunion years in the making than with a never-before-seen cookie combo?

As V added, “We’re back, and we’re bringing the hotteok OREO.”

The OREO & BTS collab cookie will be available for pre-order beginning June 1 at OREO.com/UnwrapTheCollab, with packages rolling out to retailers starting on June 8.
