Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has pledged to work harmoniously with ranking lawmakers and newly elected members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The governor made the commitment following the February 21 by-elections into the state legislature, which saw APC candidates clinch key seats.
In the by-elections, Ukalikpe Napoleon emerged winner of the Ahoada East State Constituency II seat, while Loolo Bulabari Henrietta secured victory in Khana State Constituency II.
Fubara described their victories as well-deserved, noting that the results reflected the trust and confidence reposed in the candidates by their constituents.
“It is the beauty of democracy. When the people believe in your capacity, they will give you their votes,” the governor said.
Extending an olive branch, Fubara said he was ready to collaborate with the new lawmakers and their colleagues in the Assembly to advance the state’s development agenda.
“I look forward to working with them and their colleagues in the Rivers State House of Assembly for the progress of our state,” he added.
He also commended residents of Ahoada East and Khana constituencies for their peaceful conduct before, during, and after the elections, describing the exercise as a demonstration of democratic maturity.
The governor’s conciliatory tone comes amid recent political developments in the state.
On February 19, the Rivers State House of Assembly suspended impeachment proceedings earlier initiated against Fubara, following months of political tension.
The crisis had pitted the governor against his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The prolonged dispute had reportedly led to a six-month emergency rule in the state before calm gradually returned.
