The Nigerian Senate has clarified that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be excluded from the proposed state police system, citing Abuja's lack of the necessary constitutional structures to operate an independent police force.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, explained that the FCT does not possess a governor or a State House of Assembly. Instead, the territory is under the direct administration of the Federal Government.
In an official statement, Adaramodu noted that the FCT is overseen by a minister who acts on directives from the Federal Executive Council, while the National Assembly serves as its legislative body.
Adaramodu addressed public inquiries regarding the exclusion, stating:
“I have heard many people raise a lot of questions on why the Federal Capital Territory is not among the plan for state police. The FCT issue is different. It is under the Federal Government,”
