Health officials are urging the public to take strict safety precautions and avoid looking directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection during the partial solar eclipse. The warning highlights the severe risks associated with improper viewing of astronomical events.
According to data from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, approximately 70 cases of vision problems were reported following the total solar eclipse in 1999. Notably, the college revealed that about 40% of those who suffered eye damage had stared at the sun for less than a minute.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an official warning, explaining that because the sun will appear dimmer than usual during the eclipse, people may find it easier to look at directly. However, doing so can result in serious damage to eyesight.
To safely observe the event, the UKHSA advises using genuine models of eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. For those without specialized gear, the agency suggests several indirect viewing alternatives. These include using a pinhole viewer, projecting the sun's image onto a sheet of paper with a simple pinhole projector, or observing the light projected through a colander or the gaps between tree leaves.

Staring directly at the sun can cause a condition known as solar retinopathy, where intense light destroys cells in the retina. Because the retina lacks pain receptors, individuals can sustain permanent eye damage without feeling any immediate discomfort. Public health agencies routinely launch safety campaigns ahead of solar eclipses because the rare nature of these celestial events draws large crowds of spectators who may not be aware of the optical hazards involved.
