OMAHA, NEBRASKA — A standard Tuesday afternoon commute turned into a scene from a disaster movie for two motorists in south-central Omaha. At approximately 3:30 p.m. on February 24, 2026, a massive sinkhole suddenly opened at the intersection of 67th and Pacific Streets, swallowing a maroon Jeep SUV and a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck that were waiting at a red light.
The Moment of Impact
Surveillance footage released by the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) Public Safety shows the two vehicles slowing to a stop as the light turned red. Without any visible warning or cracks in the pavement, the asphalt beneath them disintegrated. The front of the Jeep plunged into the earth first, followed almost instantly by the pickup truck. Several other nearby vehicles missed falling into the chasm by only a few feet, with one white car seen reversing frantically as the hole expanded.
Heroic Bystander Response Miraculously, neither driver sustained injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram was able to climb out of the crater unaided. Demonstrating the "good neighbor" spirit praised by local officials, he immediately turned back to assist the driver of the Jeep SUV, who was trapped in the deeper part of the hole. Other bystanders rushed from their own cars to form a human chain, pulling the SUV driver to safety before emergency crews arrived on the scene.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer expressed his gratitude to the citizens who intervened. "I am always impressed by Omaha citizens helping each other out," he stated, following a Facebook post by the department thanking the "good neighbors" who took immediate action.
Cause of the Collapse The Omaha Public Works Department and the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) conducted an initial investigation into the cause of the disaster. Officials confirmed that the collapse was triggered by a major water main break beneath the intersection. The leaking water had likely been washing away the subsoil for some time, creating a hollow void that finally gave way under the weight of the stationary traffic.
Impact on the Area The intersection, located in a trendy district popular with university students and featuring numerous restaurants and a movie theater, remains closed as of Thursday, February 26. Authorities have warned that the street could be shut down for several days as crews work to stabilize the surrounding ground and repair the ruptured infrastructure. Motorists in the Aksarben area are being diverted to alternative routes as the city conducts emergency inspections of nearby pipes to ensure no further collapses occur.
