A vessel traveling through the Strait of Hormuz has been damaged after being struck by an "unknown projectile," resulting in a crew casualty, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The strike, which occurred early on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, caused damage to the ship's engine room. The vessel's company security officer reported the attack to the UKMTO and indicated that the Omani coastguard was providing assistance to the remaining crew members. No environmental impact has been reported so far.
Maritime authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine who or what was responsible. Meanwhile, the UKMTO has advised all transiting vessels to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity in the area.
This incident occurs during a period of severe disruption for shipping through the strategic waterway. Daily vessel crossings have dropped to single digits, down from more than 130 per day prior to the war launched on Iran by the United States and Israel. Iran effectively closed the strait after the conflict began on February 28, frequently targeting commercial shipping and declaring intentions to charge fees for passage.
