The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation to determine whether a violent midair altercation inside the cockpit of a Flydubai flight bound for Israel was connected to terrorism.
According to the Emirati state news agency WAM, UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has assembled a team of public prosecutors to investigate the clash between the two pilots on board Flydubai flight FZ1073. Investigators will examine the circumstances and motives behind the incident, specifically looking into whether it was connected to any "terrorist activity or intent" or if it involved prior planning or direction.
Al Shamsi stated that Emirati judicial authorities hold jurisdiction over the case because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and flies under its flag. He noted that UAE law applies to crimes committed on board "even if they occur outside the country’s territory."
The flight, carrying 174 people, was traveling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 3
