UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE — In a bold move to institutionalize global best practices within its medical sector, the Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, has finalized a collaboration with the QANTUS Medical Foundation, a premier healthcare consultancy firm based in the United States. The partnership, announced on Monday, February 23, 2026, aims to trigger a fundamental "culture change" across all tiers of healthcare delivery in the state.
Training All Cadres of Health Workers According to the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the training program is comprehensive and designed to reach every category of health worker, from primary healthcare centers to tertiary institutions. The primary objective is to equip personnel with modern skills in communication, patient empathy, and professional conduct.
"The Governor has approved this collaboration to ensure a healthcare culture change in the state," Prince Kanu stated. He emphasized that the initiative is not just about technical medical skills but about reforming the behavior and attitude of healthcare providers to match international standards of excellence.
A Phased Implementation Strategy The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, further detailed that the training would be implemented in distinct phases. The first phase will focus on doctors and nurses in major state-owned hospitals, before expanding to pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and health workers at the local government level.
Professor Uche described QANTUS Medical Foundation as a group led by an Abia-born professional with extensive experience in international health systems. "These are experts who help health systems adopt a culture change that enables them to offer the best services to the people. It ensures that communication is clear and that health workers are able to match their skills with behaviors that prioritize patient outcomes," the Commissioner explained.
Digital Health and Vaccination Milestones This partnership coincides with other significant health achievements in the state. The government recently announced a 96% coverage rate for the measles-rubella vaccination campaign, exceeding the required global threshold. Additionally, the Abia State Digital Health Pilot Project has been launched in selected hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) to modernize data management and service delivery.
By integrating the QANTUS training program with these digital and preventative health initiatives, the Otti administration signals its intent to build a resilient, patient-centric healthcare system that serves as a model for the rest of Nigeria.
