Suspected cultists kill security guard in Lagos

A security guard identified as Godwin was killed on Saturday evening in the Abule Ijesha neighborhood of Yaba, Lagos State, in an attack carried out by suspected cultists.

The incident caused widespread panic among local residents as gunfire erupted in the area. According to a police source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the attackers arrived in a vehicle and confronted Godwin near his workplace. They shot him in the head and reportedly struck him with an axe.

“We received a report that gunmen suspected to be cultists killed a security guard identified as Godwin in the area. The assailants came in a vehicle and shot him not far from his duty post. Eyewitnesses also reported that they attacked him with an axe,” the source said.

The source further noted that the gunmen discharged several shots into the air as they fled the scene, causing passersby and residents to scramble for safety. Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the killing and are working to identify and apprehend the suspects.

On Sunday, an anti-cultism platform known as Naija Confra reported that three other individuals were wounded by gunfire during the confrontation.

According to the platform's social media post:

“Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers came in a white Mercedes-Benz, shot at Ibadan, and then attacked him with an axe on the head and hand.”

The platform also stated:

“The attackers were also said to have fired randomly at other people in the area, leaving three innocent girls with bullet wounds. It is unclear whether their random shooting killed another person.”
