Veteran Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has announced her retirement from international football, ending a distinguished 16-year career with the Nigerian national team.
The 34-year-old centre-back earned 86 caps for the 10-time African champions during her tenure. Ohale's highly successful international career includes winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title four times and representing Nigeria at four FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments.
Ohale announced her decision on social media, sharing that she will now focus on her club career after stepping away from the international stage.
"After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football," Ohale wrote on Instagram.
Why It Matters
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are historically the most dominant force in African women's football, having won the continental championship a record ten times. The departure of a veteran defender like Ohale, who anchored the national team's backline for over a decade, marks a significant transitional phase for the squad as they look to integrate a younger generation of players. Her transition to focusing solely on her club career also highlights the growing viability and profile of professional women's club football globally, where many top African athletes now compete.
