MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE — The Nigerian Army is in mourning following a deadly encounter with insurgents from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026. Reports from the frontline confirm that Major U.I. Mairiga, along with several other unidentified soldiers, lost their lives during a fierce battle at the Kajeri military camp, situated near the vital Banki junction in the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Midnight Ambush The attack reportedly began around 2:00 AM when a large contingent of ISWAP fighters, traveling in multiple gun trucks and motorcycles, launched a multi-pronged assault on the military outpost. Security sources indicate that the terrorists utilized the cover of darkness and the surrounding bushland to move close to the perimeter before unleashing a barrage of heavy gunfire and Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs).
Major Mairiga, who was the commanding officer on the ground at the time of the attack, reportedly led the counter-offensive from the front, coordinating his troops to repel the invaders. Despite the overwhelming firepower of the insurgents, the troops managed to hold their position for several hours before reinforcements from nearby Bama could arrive. Tragically, it was during this intense exchange of fire that the Major and several of his men were fatally wounded.

Mairiga was described by his colleagues as a "soldier's soldier"—a disciplined and courageous officer who had participated in several successful operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP. As of Sunday evening, the remains of the fallen heroes have been evacuated to a military hospital in Maiduguri. The Army is expected to issue a formal statement and notify the families of the deceased once full operational reports are finalized.
