Norway's royal family gathers at King Harald's bedside as his condition worsens

Members of Norway's royal family have gathered at the bedside of King Harald as the monarch's health condition deteriorates.

The 89-year-old sovereign has been receiving care in the hospital for more than a week. Medical staff are treating him for a rare blood condition.

Why It Matters

King Harald V has served as Norway's head of state since ascending the throne in 1991, representing a modern and highly popular constitutional monarchy. Under the Norwegian constitution, the royal family performs largely ceremonial duties but remains an important symbol of national identity and unity. When the king is incapacitated or hospitalized, Crown Prince Haakon temporarily assumes royal responsibilities as regent, ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of official state functions.
