AUSTIN, TEXAS — The vibrant entertainment district of Downtown Austin was transformed into a scene of carnage in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026. Law enforcement officials have now confirmed that the man responsible for the mass shooting at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden was Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old resident of Pflugerville, Texas. Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen who emigrated from Senegal in 2006, was shot and killed by police officers at the scene after a violent rampage that left two people dead and 14 others wounded.
The "Property of Allah" Apparel and Motive Indicators Chilling details regarding Diagne’s appearance and potential motivations have emerged. According to reports from the Associated Press and other major outlets, Diagne was wearing a hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with the words “PROPERTY OF ALLAH” and an undershirt featuring the design of the Iranian flag.
The FBI has activated its Joint Terrorism Task Force to assist the Austin Police Department in the investigation. While officials caution that it is too early to definitively label the attack as terrorism, they have cited several "indicators" found on Diagne’s person and inside his vehicle—including a Quran—that suggest a potential nexus to extremist ideology. Some investigators are exploring whether the attack was a retaliatory response to recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes against high-level targets in Iran.
Account of the Attack Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis detailed a calculated and cold-blooded assault. Diagne allegedly drove a large SUV past Buford's several times before stopping in front of the venue around 1:30 AM. He initially began firing a handgun out of the vehicle’s window, targeting patrons seated on the outdoor patio.
After the initial volley of shots, Diagne parked his vehicle, stepped out with a rifle, and continued shooting at pedestrians as he walked east on 6th Street. Responding officers, who were already stationed nearby due to the high weekend crowds, confronted Diagne within a minute of the first shots. Three officers returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.
Casualties and Community Impact The shooting resulted in the deaths of two victims at the scene. Of the 14 others transported to local hospitals, at least three remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. St. David’s HealthCare confirmed that several patients have been treated and released, but the psychological toll on the city remains immense.
This incident marks one of the deadliest shootings in the history of Austin’s famous 6th Street district. As the FBI serves search warrants at Diagne’s residence in Pflugerville, authorities are also looking into his history, which includes prior arrests in New York City and Texas, as well as reports of previous "mental health episodes." Whether this was an act of a "lone wolf" inspired by international events or the result of personal instability remains the central focus of the ongoing federal probe.
