ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a major step toward building a 21st-century digital economy, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has formally approved the rollout of a nationwide Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System. The approval, granted during the council meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, aims to replace Nigeria’s inconsistent and largely manual addressing framework with a modern, geospatial intelligent system.
A Geospatial Revolution Disclosing the development, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, explained that the initiative is a key target of the ministry's strategic blueprint. Developed in close collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), led by Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi, the new system utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.
Unlike the old six-digit numeric codes introduced in 1986, which often only identified broad districts, the new alphanumeric codes will be tied to precise coordinates. This means that every specific location—whether a residence, a business, or an open space—will be assigned a unique combination of letters and numbers. This "geocoding" allows for machine-readable sorting and seamless integration into digital mapping platforms and logistics software.
Beyond Mail: An Economic and Security Enabler Minister Tijani emphasized that the impact of this reform extends far beyond the post office. "The Digital Postcode System will serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, and more efficient logistics," he stated.
For the e-commerce sector, which has long struggled with "last-mile" delivery failures due to poor addressing, this system is expected to significantly reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction. Additionally, emergency services (police, fire, and ambulance) will be able to locate distress calls with pinpoint accuracy, potentially saving lives in critical situations. The system will also enhance financial inclusion by providing a verified "Know Your Customer" (KYC) address for banking and government service delivery.
Implementation and Next Steps The project builds on years of groundwork, including data from the National Population Commission's census mapping. NIPOST is expected to lead the nationwide sensitisation and rollout, ensuring that businesses and individuals understand how to access and use their new digital addresses. Officials describe this approval as a "foundational" infrastructure investment, placing accurate addressing in the same category of importance as broadband connectivity. As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, this system will provide the essential "connective tissue" required to link people, businesses, and services more efficiently across the country.
