Mel Schilling never lost sight of what matters most in life.
And the Married at First Sight U.K. host’s devotion to her family was most evident to her husband Gareth Brisbane, who confirmed her death March 24 after a two-year battle with colon cancer. She was 54.
In a post on Schilling’s Instagram page following her passing, Brisbane described how she “nailed” her role as a mom to their daughter Maddie, 11, while also fulfilling her TV duties.
“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling—matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV,” he wrote. “To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
Brisbane also offered insight into his bittersweet farewell with Schilling—who hosted the Australian version of the reality series as well—after she tackled her health battle with “courage, grace, compassion and empathy.”
“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” he shared. “It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”
Two weeks before her death, the dating coach shared that she had been given a terminal diagnosis just as she was due to begin a “groundbreaking clinical trial” to fight her disease, which metastasized in her lungs in February 2024.

“After many tests I was told the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do,” she explained in a March 12 Instagram post. “My light is starting to fade—and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love.”
In the wake of Schilling’s death, Channel 4, which aired both the U.K. and Australian iterations of Married at First Sight, described her work as being “at the heart” of the franchise’s international success.
“It reflected so much about her—her fierce advocacy for other women, her passion for healthy relationships and her mission to unite people in love,” the network said on Instagram. “Everyone who knew her will miss all this about her and much more. We share in the sorrow that we're sure many viewers will now feel at this terrible loss.”
