Lagos govt moves against illegal use of dealer number plates

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its warning to motorists and car dealers regarding the unauthorized, routine, or permanent use of dealer registration plates.

In a statement released on Sunday, Bolanle Ogunlola, the Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, emphasized that these specialized plates must only be utilized for legally permitted activities, warning of penalties for non-compliance.

Ogunlola noted that under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, the application of dealer plates is restricted to specific timeframes and purposes. Legitimate uses include authorized test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection services, and transporting unregistered vehicles directly from ports or licensed dealerships to authorized locations.

Conversely, using these plates for everyday private travel or unrestricted public road use is strictly forbidden.

“Their use for private daily commuting, continuous operation on public roads, or on vehicles already sold is prohibited,” Ogunlola said.

To enforce these rules, the Vehicle Inspection Service has already impounded 175 vehicles for allegedly violating dealer plate regulations. The recovered plates are set to be confiscated, and the impounded vehicles will undergo further investigation.

Additionally, the spokesperson cautioned drivers against using vehicles with unauthorized, fake, hidden, or poorly displayed license plates, noting that offenders face vehicle impoundment and prosecution under state traffic laws.

The Ministry of Transportation has called on motorists and dealers to review the regulations to ensure compliance, stating that rigorous enforcement is crucial for improving vehicle tracking, accountability, and overall road safety in Lagos.
