How Ryan Reynolds Has Supported Blake Lively Through Her Legal Battle

Ryan Reynolds Speaks Out as Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni Court Case Heads to Trial

A surefire sign that it's business as usual for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds on the homefront?

Pranks remain in the offing, with Lively sharing that their children at least attempted to make quite a splash on April Fool's Day, taking bathroom humor to a new level by covering a toilet bowl with plastic wrap.

As the mom of James, 11, Inez, 9, Betty, 6, and Olin, 3—apparently all chips off the old block—wrote on her Instagram Story, "I knew I never should’ve taught them how to read a calendar."

But while irreverent trolling tends to be Lively and Reynolds' public love language, it's no joke how the Deadpool actor has been showing up for his spouse amid her lengthy legal battle with It Ends With Us costar and director Justin Baldoni.

And as Lively stays the course, with her remaining three claims set to be heard at trial beginning May 18, Reynolds couldn't be more supportive.

"I’ve never in my life been more proud of my wife,” Reynolds said April 19 on Today's Sunday Sitdown Live with Willie Geist. "People have no idea what’s really going on, you know? And I’ve just never in my life been more proud of someone with that level of integrity that brings that with them and carries that with them in everything that they do."

While a judge dismissed 10 of Lively's 13 claims against Baldoni, including sexual harassment, earlier this month, her allegations of breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting in retaliation were allowed to proceed.

Following the decision, Lively maintained that "the heart" of her case was still moving forward, explaining on her Instagram Stories April 3, "The last thing I wanted in my life was a lawsuit, but I brought this case because of the pervasive RETALIATION I faced, and continue to, for privately and professionally asking for a safe working environment for myself and others."

Baldoni, whose $400 million countersuit alleging defamation against Lively and Reynolds was dismissed last June, has denied wrongdoing.

Not that Reynolds needed to be his wife's co-defendant in a lawsuit to have her back.

"Stories about women seem to be held to a different set of standards, and that is to say that they're often held to the standards women are held to in life," Reynolds said in a Jan. 7, 2025, speech at the National Board of Review Awards. "You must be perfect. You must hide your strength. You must shape-shift or placate.”

While he was ostensibly talking about Wicked, Lively's then-recently filed lawsuit—and the mixed reception she'd already received in the court of public opinion—can't have been far from his mind.

This past January, when a trove of unsealed court documents from the case revealed private emails and texts—including a message to Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso in which Reynolds quipped about It Ends With Us, "One day, we’ll make a movie about the movie"—he was undaunted.

"Yes, Ryan got involved—what husband wouldn’t support his wife and the mother of his children?" a rep for Reynolds told Puck News after the messages were aired. "He saw his wife fighting daily to stand up against sexual harassment in a private and respectful way, only to face retaliation for doing so."

"If anything," the rep continued, "Ryan feels like he wasn’t angry enough. He passionately believes in and will stand up for the basic right to a safe workplace free of harassment and retaliation for his wife and others. Then, now and always."

The entrepreneurial Welcome to Wrexham star has also never been one to sit on the sidelines when Lively is embarking on a massive undertaking.

"He's incredibly involved," the Gossip Girl alum told E! News in 2014, referring at the time to his role in her (ultimately short-lived) lifestyle brand Preserve. "We're involved in everything that the other does."

"There is nothing that goes through that I don't run by him," she added. "And I love that he challenges me. He's someone that I trust when he challenges me."

Ultimately, Lively said, "It's nice to have a partner in everything."

And she knew even before they tied the knot in 2012 that she had a best friend for life.

"I'd never known anything like the friendship that I had with him," she told Marie Claire in 2016. "I could like him as much as I loved him."

Reynolds echoed the sentiment, telling Extra in 2021, "We really liked each other before as friends beforehand. We like each other even more so now."

And while he can only say so much publicly about Lively's ordeal, impending trial date and all, his actions have spoken volumes.

They hit their first red carpet together, post-filing, in February 2025 at the SNL 50: Anniversary Celebration—where Reynolds poked fun at the headlines—and they're rarely spotted not hand-in-hand, whether they're out and about in New York or cuddling during a Wrexham A.F.C. match in Wales.

And Reynolds' goal is to always be there for his family.

“My wife and kids are everything. I mean, that’s it,” he said on the Sunday Sitdown Live. “When we finally close our eyes to this mortal dumb show, those are the ones that are going to matter, you know?”
