Gunfire heard across Ethiopia border as growing numbers flee into Kenya

Gunfire has been reported along the frontier separating Ethiopia and Kenya at Moyale, where a surge in localized violence is forcing thousands of people to escape across the border into Kenyan territory.

The violent clashes are the result of a persistent territorial dispute between Ethiopia's Oromia and Somali regions.

Why It Matters

The area surrounding Moyale has historically experienced periodic clashes linked to long-standing land and resource rivalries between the Oromo and Somali ethnic communities, two of Ethiopia's largest populations. Ethiopia's system of ethnically based federalism means regional boundary demarcations frequently intersect with vital pastoral grazing lands and key trade routes, leading to recurring administrative and local conflicts. When these regional disputes escalate into open violence, they regularly trigger cross-border displacement, placing security and humanitarian strains on communities in northern Kenya.
