Global Deployment: Tinubu Approves Posting of 65 Ambassadors to Foreign Missions

ABUJA, NIGERIA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad by approving the official postings of 65 ambassadors-designate to various countries and multilateral organizations. The directive, issued on Friday, March 6, 2026, follows the Senate's confirmation of the nominees last December and marks the end of a long-standing vacuum in many of Nigeria's key foreign missions.

Strategic Non-Career Postings The list of non-career ambassadors features several prominent political figures, former public officials, and strategic allies of the administration. Notably, former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has been assigned to head Nigeria’s mission in Germany, while former presidential aide Reno Omokri will serve as the envoy to Mexico. These appointments are seen as a strategic move to leverage the high-profile media and political backgrounds of the appointees to navigate complex international relations.

Other significant non-career appointments include:

  • Senator Jimoh Ibrahim: Assigned as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

  • Lateef Kayode Are: Appointed as the Ambassador to the United States.

  • Aminu Dalhatu: Designated as the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

  • Ayodele Oke: Assigned as the Ambassador to France.

  • Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau: Assigned as the Ambassador to China.

  • Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole: Designated as the High Commissioner to Canada.

  • Senator Ita Enang: Appointed as the High Commissioner to South Africa.

  • Dr. Victor Okezie Ikpeazu: Assigned as the Ambassador to Spain.

Career Diplomats and Professional Representation In addition to the political appointees, the President approved the deployment of 34 career ambassadors. These are seasoned foreign service officers who have risen through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Their deployment emphasizes a blend of political strategy and professional diplomacy, ensuring that Nigeria’s core interests are managed with technical expertise. Notable career postings include Ambassador Abdussalam Habu Zayyad to Senegal, Ambassador Shehu Ilu Barde to Ghana, and Ambassador Haidara Mohammed Idris to the Netherlands.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already secured agrément (diplomatic clearance) from several host countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The Ministry has been directed to immediately commence a comprehensive induction programme for all 65 envoys-designate. This training is intended to ensure they are fully briefed on the administration’s "Renewed Hope" foreign policy goals before they officially depart for their stations.

Operationalizing the "4D" Foreign Policy This deployment is a crucial move to operationalize President Tinubu’s "4D" foreign policy—anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora. With the appointment of these 65 envoys, Nigeria aims to enhance its global standing, facilitate the attraction of foreign direct investment, and provide better protection and engagement for Nigerians living in the diaspora.

The new ambassadors are expected to depart for their respective stations following the completion of their induction and the receipt of final diplomatic protocols from their host governments. This mass deployment ends months of interim leadership by chargé d’affaires in many missions, signaling a more assertive and present Nigerian voice on the global stage as the nation seeks to recalibrate its influence in Africa and beyond.
