WASHINGTON D.C. / PERSIAN GULF — The maritime landscape of the Middle East has been fundamentally altered as of Wednesday, March 4, 2026. President Donald Trump has officially declared that the Iranian Navy is being "annihilated," with U.S. forces successfully sinking 17 warships and disabling the country's naval headquarters. The announcement comes as Operation Epic Fury enters its fifth day, moving from a surgical air campaign to a total suppression of Iran’s naval and coastal capabilities.
The "Zero Ships" Reality According to Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the Iranian presence in key regional waterways—the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz—has effectively dropped to zero. "Two days ago, the Iranian regime had 11 ships in the Gulf of Oman; today they have none," Admiral Cooper stated in a briefing. The U.S. Navy used a combination of Tomahawk missiles, B-1 Lancer strategic bombers, and carrier-based F/A-18 Super Hornets to hunt down and strike Iranian vessels both at sea and while docked at piers in Chah Bahar and Bandar Abbas.
Among the casualties of the campaign is what officials described as the "pride of Iran’s Navy"—an advanced Jamaran-class corvette and a highly sophisticated submarine, both of which suffered catastrophic damage. President Trump, posting on his Truth Social platform, did not mince words: "We are going after the rest—they will soon be floating at the bottom of the sea, also! Other than that, their Navy is doing very well!"
Freedom of Navigation Restored The primary objective of these naval strikes has been to prevent Iran from making good on its threat to block the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which 20% of the world's oil and gas flows. By "sinking the fleet," the U.S. and its Israeli allies aim to ensure that global energy markets remain stable, even as crude prices have surged past $84 per barrel due to the ongoing conflict.
The Pentagon confirmed that in addition to the ships, the Iranian Naval Headquarters has been "largely destroyed" by B-2 stealth bombers dropping 2,000-lb bunker-buster munitions. These strikes have effectively severed the command and control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), leaving any remaining small fast-attack boats without central direction.
A Call to Lay Down Arms In a move described as unconventional psychological warfare, President Trump has used his platform to speak directly to the Iranian rank-and-file. He called on Iranian sailors and the IRGC to "lay down your weapons" and "abandon ship," urging them to peacefully merge with "Iranian patriots" who wish to reclaim their country.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Navy remains in a state of high alert, providing government-backed insurance to commercial tankers to encourage them to continue moving through the Gulf. While the physical Iranian Navy may be resting on the seabed, the threat from land-based mobile missile launchers remains a top priority for U.S. intelligence and strike teams.
