An Ethiopian opposition group, the People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP), has accused the federal government of steering the northern Tigray region toward a new armed conflict.
According to the EPRP, officials in Addis Ababa are running a propaganda campaign. The opposition party claims this effort is designed to psychologically prepare the public for a return to war.
Why It Matters
This warning follows a devastating two-year civil war between Ethiopia's federal government and Tigrayan forces, which lasted from late 2020 until a peace accord was signed in November 2022. The conflict resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties, severe humanitarian crises, and massive displacement throughout northern Ethiopia. Although the peace agreement halted active combat, unresolved territorial disputes and political friction continue to pose a threat to the region's stability.
