Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso has explained the reasons behind Enzo Fernandez’s exclusion from the squad for the EFL Cup match against League One side, Luton Town.
Chelsea played against the Hatters in the second round of the Carabao Cup, recording a 2-0 win.
Fernandez was not included in the squad for the match, a decision that coincides with ongoing speculation about his future at the club, particularly with Manchester City reportedly interested in signing him before the deadline.
Alonso addressed the media regarding Fernandez’s absence from the match against Luton.

In an interview with Sky Sports, he stated, “We evaluated both individual and team situations, and we have concluded that he will not be part of the squad today.”
When questioned about Fernandez’s future at Chelsea, he noted that any outcome is possible, adding, “Let’s see. We must be ready for anything.”
The decision to exclude Fernandez from the squad has raised eyebrows, especially since Alonso mentioned during the pre-match press conference that the Argentine midfielder had been training well and was expected to participate against the League One side.
As reported by Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, discussions between Chelsea and Manchester City are still ongoing, and Fernandez’s absence from the squad was attributed to the talks over his potential transfer.
Chelsea are said to be seeking a fee of £120 million for the 25-year-old midfielder. Manchester City have already invested over £200 million in their midfield overhaul, having signed Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The addition of Fernandez would further enhance their midfield capabilities.
