A fatal gang assault has left the Haitian community of Kenscoff reeling, striking at a time when the nation is organizing its first general elections in more than ten years. The upcoming vote is currently scheduled to take place on December 13.
Although the voter registration process has already begun, political and security experts have issued warnings regarding the situation. They caution that the pervasive lack of security throughout Haiti could present severe obstacles to conducting a credible and fair electoral process.

Haiti has been locked in a deep political and humanitarian crisis, leaving the country without any democratically elected national officials since early 2023. Armed gangs have seized control of an estimated 80 percent of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, and have increasingly expanded their violent operations into surrounding suburbs and rural communities. The international community, through a United Nations-backed security mission led by Kenya, has been working to help local police stabilize the nation so that safe and democratic elections can finally be held.
