A cruise liner collided with a container vessel while attempting to depart Bremerhaven in northwestern Germany during adverse weather conditions brought by storm Manja on Sunday.
The 293-meter cruise ship Mein Schiff 3, operated by Hamburg-based TUI Cruises, was embarking on a 20-day "Timeless Canary Islands" voyage when high crosswinds appeared to overpower the tugboats assisting the ship down the Weser River. The collision was filmed from on board the liner, which was scheduled to make its first port call on October 28 in A Coruna, Spain.
TUI Cruises reported no injuries among the 2,428 guests and 922 crew members on board. The vessel was brought back to the pier for a damage evaluation. Media reports and footage show that at least three lifeboats suffered severe damage, potentially impacting the trip unless replacement boats can be secured quickly. Under similar circumstances, cruise operators have negotiated cancellations with some passengers to ensure total occupancy matches the remaining lifeboat capacity.
The collision involved the container ship MSC Victorine, which postponed its departure for Hamburg following the impact. Footage indicates that Mein Schiff 3 narrowly missed a smaller container ship, the MSC Anne F., before striking the MSC Victorine. While an initial police report noted a third vessel was involved, additional reports indicated that two tugboats were also damaged. Shipping in the area was temporarily suspended after the accident.
The event also prompted public reaction online. On October 25, 2026, social media user Paro. Karl Kautabak (@KarlKautabak) commented on the broader environmental impact of the industry, stating:
blockquote>"Luxus auf See darf nicht bedeuten, dass die Umwelt die Rechnung bezahlt. Wir brauchen einen konsequenten Ausstieg aus besonders klimaschädlichen Kreuzfahrten. Klimaschutz ist keine freiwillige Zusatzleistung!"Why It Matters
Under international maritime safety regulations, passenger ships are strictly prohibited from setting sail without fully functional lifeboat capacity for 100 percent of the people on board. Because of these stringent mandates, damage to life-saving equipment routinely forces cruise lines to secure immediate repairs or reduce passenger numbers before receiving clearance to resume a voyage. Furthermore, Bremerhaven is a major European maritime hub situated along the narrow Weser River estuary, where navigating massive cruise liners alongside heavy commercial shipping becomes particularly hazardous during high-wind North Sea storm events.
