The chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Fiidi Council Ward in the Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Igbu Terhemen, has been killed following an attack by unidentified hoodlums.
Terhemen was reportedly targeted on Tuesday evening. According to a friend of the deceased who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Terhemen had gone out to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area but failed to return home. This prompted family members and friends to launch a search. They eventually discovered him unconscious at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday in a bush near his residence, located near the NNPC Depot along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road on the outskirts of Makurdi.
Terhemen passed away before he could receive medical care. His attackers did not take his mobile phone, which was later found on his body at the morgue. His friend also noted a needle-like wound on Terhemen's body, suggesting he may have been injected with an unknown substance and left to die.
"All that is left for the police to uncover in the course of their investigation because this is a sad development in the state," the friend said.
The Benue State chapter of the NDC has condemned the killing. In a statement released on Wednesday, the party's state Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, expressed the party's grief and anger over the incident.
"The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Benue State chapter, has condemned the gruesome murder of Hon. Igbu Terhemen, who, until his death, was the NDC chairman of Fiidi Council Ward in Makurdi Local Government Area," Bem stated.
According to the party's statement, Terhemen was tied with ropes, injected with suspected poisonous substances, and abandoned near his home, leaving him unable to speak before he died.
The NDC state chairman, Ohini Ojegbe, characterized the killing as a "broad-daylight evil" and demanded that security agencies launch an immediate investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible.
