BOKI, CROSS RIVER STATE — Residents of the Katchuan Irruan community in Boki Local Government Area were thrown into shock on the morning of Thursday, February 26, 2026, following a brazen arson attack on St. Mary’s Quasi Parish Catholic Church. The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:00 AM, saw unidentified individuals invade the church premises to perpetrate what community leaders are calling a sacrilegious act.
Details of the Destruction According to the Cross River State Police Command, the attackers gained unlawful entry into the church facility and focused their destructive efforts on the sacristy and the altar area. The resulting fire destroyed all historical church records, sacramental items, and sections of the sanctuary. The loss of these records is particularly painful for the parish, as many documents dating back several decades were stored in the sacristy.
The devastation was not limited to the building itself. The attackers also targeted the personal property of the parish priest. Two vehicles parked within the church compound—a Lexus RX 350 and a Toyota Corolla—were doused with flammable substances and set ablaze. Both vehicles were reportedly burnt beyond recognition before emergency responders and community members could contain the flames. The sight of the charred remains of the cars has become a focal point of grief for the local parishioners.
Official Police Statement The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Cross River Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident. He stated that while the motive for the attack remains unclear, the police have launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend the culprits. Forensic experts have been deployed to the site to gather evidence that might lead to the arrest of the arsonists.
ASP Eitokpah noted that no suspect has been identified at this time, but efforts are ongoing to ascertain those responsible for this unfortunate criminal act. He further confirmed that the scene has been visited by senior officials and the case has been referred to the Okundi Police Station for discreet investigation.
Community Reaction The Katchuan Irruan community, which is largely agrarian and known for its peaceful religious coexistence, is currently in a state of mourning. Local leaders have condemned the attack, describing it as an affront to the entire community regardless of faith. While some speculate that the attack might be linked to local land disputes or communal tensions, the church leadership has urged for calm and asked the faithful to remain peaceful during this trying time.
This attack comes amid a growing climate of concern regarding the security of religious institutions in rural areas. It has prompted fresh calls for increased security presence and better protection for communities that are distant from major urban centers.
