Arsenal's French centre back William Saliba is set to miss a significant amount of playing time after sustaining a back injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, according to the reigning Premier League champions.
The injury troubled Saliba during the tournament, restricting his training sessions. He was taken off during the first half of France's 2-0 semifinal loss to Spain and was subsequently unavailable for their 6-4 defeat against England in the third-place playoff.
Following his return to London this week, medical evaluations determined that the defender does not need to undergo surgery. In a statement released on Wednesday, Arsenal announced:
"Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation."
The club added:
"Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme."Arsenal also stated:
"Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible."
Saliba was a key figure for the North London side last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions. His contributions helped the Gunners secure their first Premier League title in 22 years and reach the final of the Champions League.
Arsenal will start defending their league title on August 21 with a home match against newly promoted Coventry City.
