A severed fiber-optic cable in New Jersey disrupted air travel across the United States on Monday, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. The incident occurred when construction crews accidentally cut a Verizon fiber line utilized for air traffic control.
The resulting outage heavily impacted airports throughout the Northeast, triggering ground stops at all three major New York City-area airports. According to the flight-tracking website FlightAware, more than 1,000 flights were canceled across the country on Monday.
